Inland pulling out all the stops

grant morgan3Inland coach Grant Morgan doesn’t believe in leaving matters to chance, which is why he and the squad currently find themselves in Pretoria.
At issue is the final match of the 2013/14 season that will pit Inland, the one-day champions, against the winner of the inland pool to decide the outcome of the CSA T20 competition on April 5. Inland of course wrapped up the coastal pool of the competition two weeks ago and have been kicking their heels since to see which of the teams from Gauteng, Northerns or Griquas they will meet in the final.
With a bit of luck, the final will be staged at The Oval but rather than leave things up in the air, Morgan decided to prepare the squad with a training camp on the Highveld.
“The teams needs some practice, and in case we have to contest the final up country, we decided to have a full training session up there,” he said.
Not having recourse to the funds other affiliate teams have, Inland, as an associate member, has embarked on the highveld mission on the proverbial sniff of an oil rag.
“We’re cutting our costs to a bare minimum,” he said, “we’re travelling in our own cars, and will be staying with friends and family.”
The training sessions and matches will be anything but easy affairs, said Morgan, adding that the loss of some stalwart players to Dolphins duty and untimely injuries to key players have forced his hand.
“As things stand now, SJ (Erwee) and Shamsi (TabraizShamsi), have been called up the Dolphions, while Prof (Ruan Pretorius) picked up a nasty ligament injury,” he said.
“Some of the other players need game time and plan for the Gauteng trip to help shape the composition of the side ahead of the final,” he said.
A huge bonus will be for the final to be staged in Pietermaritzburg, but the venue will only be decided after the final round of matches this weekend.
“We’re holding thumbs, but in any event, the opposition can expect a tough match,” said Morgan.
