Judging by the entries pouring in for the KFC Mini-Cricket Festival, one of the highlights on the city’s cricket calendar, the action promises to be fast and furious on Saturday, February 15.
The Oval and adjacent Duckpond venue in Alexandra Park will be a sea of red-and-white as hundreds of children bat, bowl and field as they practice their cricket skills under supervision.
KZN Inland Cricket Union mini-cricket co-ordinator Mercia Baatjies has been busy the last few days to organise the event.
“We’re expecting children from all ages and ability and the challenge is to ensure they all have fun,” she said. While most of the children will arrive as part of a team, those whom are not already in teams will be placed in teams to ensure all participants have fun, she said.
Baatjies said most of the city’s schools are participating, but that buses from afar afield as Kokstad, Matatiele, Underberg, Richmond, Estcourt and Winterton are also expected.
“It’s really a wonderful opportunity for parents, teachers and children in outlying areas to take part in a min-cricket festival with the emphasis on fun and full participation,” she said.
