New season off to winning start
The senior Inland team got the new cricket season off to a perfect start with a double win over Namibia over the weekend at The Oval.
The home team claimed honours in both the three-day and one-day matches, winning comfortably on both accounts.
The scene for Inland’s comprehensive seven-wicket win in their three-day match was set by a commanding bowling performance. Pace man SinethembaMjekula led from the front with five wickets for 28 runs, while newcomers Graham Hume, Craig Alexander and Shane Burger weighed in with three wickets and one wicket each respectively.
Having restricted the visitors from Windhoek to 111, the Inland batsmen compiled 282 with Dolphins regular Imran Khan (122), NicHendrie (60) and SJ Erwee (37) leading the charge.
Namibia fared better in their second innings with a total of 275, leaving the home team to chase down the winning target of 105. This was duly achieved with Dolphins batsman Divan van Wyk (56) and Erwee (33) seeing Inland home for an impressive win.
In Sunday’s one-day-game, Inland elected to bat first and posted a formidable 301with Kyle Nipper (95) and SJ Erwee (93) dominating the scoreboard. Nipper was particularly harsh on the Namibian bowlers with no less than 15 boundaries that included two massive sixes in only 73 balls, while Erwee hammered 11 fours.
The hapless visitors were rolled over in their innings, despite a shortened knock due to bad light and fell way short of the required 220 in 23 overs with a total of 91. The Inland bowlers were disciplined with Yususf Abdullah and Ruan Pretorius picking up two wickets each.
The double triumph left Inland coach Grant Morgan a happy man who attributed the performances to a collective effort.
“There was great commitment from all concerned, and I was especially happy that the integration of the Dolphin players worked well, and that players all brought their part,” he said.
“But credit must go to the entire set up at The Oval,” he said, “from the players, to the administration and the ground preparation team.”
Next up is the team from North West who take on Inland this weekend, starting on Thursday and playing the one-day match on Sunday at The Oval.
